Hosted credits vs bring-your-own-key MCP generation

Compare hosted OAuth and credits with copied provider keys and self-managed integrations.

Compare Studio plans
Related circuit

Choose hosted credits when a shared catalog, visible preflight costs, and a browser-consent connection reduce integration work. Choose BYO keys when direct provider contracting, provider-specific controls, or an existing centralized secrets platform outweigh that convenience. Before deciding, test one representative image and one failure path, document who can authorize generation, and compare the complete operating burden rather than only the unit price.

Keep the decision scoped to credential and operational ownership. This page does not claim that hosted Studio credits are cheaper, faster, more private, or higher quality than a self-managed provider stack, and recent community retrieval did not verify OfflineCreator-specific outcomes for either path.

Credit gauge

Compare the two operating models

The hosted route publishes model costs in Studio credits and uses the same balance across web, MCP, CLI, and API generation. The current public package exposes nine tools: list_models, get_credits, generate, upload_input, get_generation, wait_generation, download_output, cancel_generation, and list_generations. A BYO-key build is not a single product contract: capabilities, prices, retention, moderation, and cancellation depend on every provider API the team selects and must be checked in those providers' current terms.

Credential ownership also changes incident response. With remote OAuth, revoke the Studio connection from account settings. With BYO keys, identify every copied secret, rotate it at the issuing provider, update each runtime, and inspect logs for accidental disclosure. Neither path removes the need to control source rights, approve spend, and review generated media before publication.

Compare exit work as well as setup work. Leaving the hosted route means exporting approved outputs and replacing the Studio-specific model, balance, lifecycle, and delivery calls. Leaving a BYO integration means rotating or closing each provider credential and replacing provider-specific request and billing logic. Record those dependencies before choosing; a lower initial integration count can create concentration, while direct integrations can create duplicated operations across vendors.

Decision grid

Choose who should hold the generation credentials

Hosted credits fit teams that want one Studio account balance, browser OAuth, and a curated model catalog without copying provider keys into every MCP client. OfflineCreator's recommended remote setup stores no API key in the client file; the agent reaches https://mcp.offlinecreatorstudio.com/mcp after the account owner completes browser consent. Generation still runs with disclosed cloud providers, so hosted does not mean local or provider-free.

A bring-your-own-key integration gives the operator a direct contractual and credential relationship with each selected provider. That can improve vendor-level control, but the operator must secure keys, track separate invoices and quotas, implement provider-specific requests, and own retries and output handling. The right comparison is operational ownership, not an unsupported claim that one route is universally cheaper, faster, or more private.

Do not confuse Studio's own fallback paths with BYO provider keys. The published package still offers local stdio and a legacy remote API-key route that authenticate to Studio with OFFLINECREATOR_API_KEY. Those are Studio credential modes. They are not documented as a way to paste fal or other supplier keys into OfflineCreator and bill those suppliers directly.

Fit filter

Audit the handoff before choosing a credential model

Write down every system that touches a request from model discovery through output retrieval. In the hosted route, the current package provides the catalog, account credit check, generation call, status and waiting tools, cancellation, and signed-output retrieval behind one Studio authorization. That reduces the number of integrations the buyer must assemble, but it also means the buyer should review Studio's documented cloud-provider boundary, account controls, and current terms before sending production material.

The current provider disclosure states that Studio sends generation inputs to the provider serving the selected model and that the launch catalog is routed through fal, which may operate or broker the underlying model. Hosted credits therefore do not eliminate third-party processing; they concentrate credential and billing ownership in the Studio account while provider processing remains disclosed and current-term dependent.

For a BYO-key route, repeat the same audit separately for every provider: where its secret is stored, who can rotate it, which service receives prompts or source media, how cost is reported, how a submitted job is reconciled after a timeout, and how outputs are retained or delivered. A provider key does not by itself supply an MCP tool contract, shared balance, cancellation workflow, or client authentication experience. Those capabilities depend on the integration the team builds and the provider's current API.

Use a short written decision record with an owner for credentials, billing, incident response, source approval, and output review. Revisit it whenever a provider, model, client, or pricing term changes. This makes the comparison falsifiable and maintainable without claiming that hosted credits or BYO keys are inherently safer or less expensive.

Run one failure exercise for each candidate. For hosted operation, revoke the OAuth connection, reconnect, submit one approved low-cost job, and reconcile its status and output through the documented tools. For BYO operation, rotate a test provider key, update the runtime, submit the comparable request, and identify the provider record used for billing and recovery. The exercise compares credential and operational ownership without pretending that one sample measures quality or price advantage.

Evidence and editorial boundary

This page owns the commercial comparison of hosted Studio credits and OAuth versus self-managed bring-your-own-key provider integrations. Keep OAuth client syntax on the OAuth page, lifecycle mechanics on the job-lifecycle page, and plan arithmetic on pricing or spend-control pages.

The August 9, 2026 last30days run returned 100 comparison items. Review classified 4 as relevant industry or hosted-MCP credential context, 18 as marginal, 53 as irrelevant, 7 as duplicates, 11 as promotional, and 7 as unverifiable, with zero stale or unsafe. None verified OfflineCreator-specific price, quality, privacy, reliability, or customer outcomes, so no community claim was added to the ledger.
